Springfield, Vermont, is a great spot for nature lovers all year long! It’s nestled between the big Green Mountains and the pretty Connecticut River Valley, giving you awesome views of rolling hills. In the summer, the rivers are clear, fields are full of sheep and cows, and forests are super green. You might see deer, foxes, and turkeys, and if you’re lucky, a moose or bear! By the rivers, there are ducks, geese, otters, beavers, and even eagles flying above. In the fall, check out the colorful leaves, go on a wagon ride, pick apples, and snack on cider donuts at Wellwood Orchard or Wood’s Cider Mill. Winter turns everything white and pretty, perfect for outdoor fun. And when it’s “mud season,” you can join in on Vermont’s big sugar making industry. Picture this: a cozy fire while sap turns into maple syrup. Don’t forget to try “sugar on snow” for a tasty treat!
Springfield offers several miles of hiking trails within town. Hartness Park is a well marked hiking opportunity with over three miles of trails. Muckross State Park is open and undergoing an expansion with a pond and waterfall. Mt Ephraim, the highest peak in Springfield is 1,490’. If you are more of a walker than a hiker, the Toonerville Trail is a 3.2 mile level trail over an old railroad bed along side the Black River. It is a very popular place for strolling, dog walking, biking and even cross country skiing in winter.
If you’re looking for a place to swim and picnic, try Stoughton Pond. The North Springfield Lake and Recreational Area has an 8.5 mile loop that includes the Army Corps of Engineers dam that prevents this area from flooding. Wilgus State Forest Park on the Connecticut River has camping, hiking, canoeing, and kayak rental. If you put in at Wilgus, you can paddle 10 miles to Hoyt’s Landing to take out.
For those who love fishing, Hoyt’s Landing at the confluence of the Black and Connecticut Rivers gives boaters and fishermen access to 22 miles of navigable water from Ascutney to Bellows Falls. Bass, perch, pike and walleye are abundant enough for hosting several fishing derbies/tournaments each year.
For biking, Ride Windsor County has routes and maps with distances and surface conditions. If you would rather twist the throttle than pedal, the winding roads of the area offer some great riding especially before the leaves fall.
For a bit of historical interest, walk through one of the thirteen cemeteries.
If you are looking for more traditional things to do in Vermont, the Crown Point Country Club is a championship 18 hole golf course that was voted the fourth friendliest in the US. The Edgar May Health and Recreational Center boasts an indoor pool and a 40 foot outdoor climbing wall. Outdoor tennis courts, a skate park and a playground can be found at Riverside Park.
One of our favorite things to do in Vermont is camping or glamping. For camping, try Wilgus State Forest Park, Getaway Campground or Tree Farm Campground. If glamour is more your style, Parker Hill Farm and Boutique Campground or Highwood Retreat are glamping at it’s best. Wild Trails Farm offers all inclusive personal and group retreats.
When the weather turns cold and the water turns hard, Springfield is the place to enjoy winter. Some of the absolute best ice fishing can be found next to Hoyt’s Landing on the Black River. It freezes early and stays frozen for longer than most other areas. Cross country skiing can be done almost anywhere, however the Crown Point Golf Course and the Springweather Nature Area in North Springfield are just hilly enough for a great experience.
If snowmobiles are your jam, VAST (Vermont Association of Snow Travelers) offers a map of routes to take you from one end of Vermont to the other with tavern stops along the way. While snowshoeing can be enjoyed anywhere there’s snow, the secluded trails winding through the woods in Springfield offer a truly immersive winter experience, enveloping you in the serene sights and sounds of the season.
For downhill skiing, Okemo, Magic, Bromley, and Stratton Mountains are close by, and when you are finished with a long day of skiing, return to the peace and more reasonable prices of Springfield to dine and sleep.
