Access to the Black River from several points along the Toonerville Trail off Clinton Street (Rte. 11).

Fishing
Hoyt’s Landing at the confluence of the Black and Connecticut Rivers is a popular fishing and boating spot, which also hosts several fishing derbies from May through October.

Crown Point Country Club at 155 Golf Course Road, an 18-hole championship course with pub.

Discover Vermont: Where Fun Knows No Bounds!
Stay at Wilgus State Park at 3985 Connecticut River Road in Springfield. It’s the only state park on the Connecticut River. Open May to October. They have 4 cabins, 6 lean-tos, and many tent sites. Kayaks for rent. Breakfast at your camp.
Just over the Connecticut River in NH is Morningside Flight Park. It offers zip lines, outdoor laser tag and kayaking, but they’re most well-known for hang gliding and paragliding.
Stop at the Springfield Food Co-op and get a picnic lunch or go to the Black River Coffee Bar for a coffee and pastry. Then go sit at a picnic table in the park.
If you are in the mood for a stroll, try the Toonerville Trail along the Black River. Parking is available at both ends of the trail. It’s a 3.2 mile easy, flat walk over an old trolley track bed. There are benches and picnic tables along the way.
Go south on Route 5 towards Bellows Falls and stop at Herrick’s Cove Nature Preserve at 4 Herrick’s Cove Road. Wildlife Festival in May with activities for all ages. There is Herrick’s Cove Quest Adventures from May to October.
Or, head to the Edgar May Health and Recreation Center at 140 Clinton Street. You can enjoy swimming in their indoor pool, use the exercise equipment, or ascend their 40′ outdoor climbing wall.

Relax and watch a movie at Springfield Cinemas 3 at 26 Main Street, opens at noon daily.
Stay the night at the Hartness House Inn at 109 Front Street. Built in 1904, home to James Hartness, once governor. Tour the underground Hartness-Porter Museum & telescope.
For a light breakfast, start at the Black River Coffee Bar at 3 Main Street. There you will enjoy locally roasted coffee and other drinks with a variety of pastries. They are open Monday through Saturday 6:30 AM to 4:30 PM (until 8:30 PM Thursdays). While there, stop at the Comtu Cascade Park next door and see our Clothespin statue made by local artist, Jamie Townsend. Use the QR code to access the history of Springfield’s inventions.
For a substantial breakfast, go to Maebelline’s at 12 Clinton Street, open Monday through Saturday from 7 AM until 2 PM. Watch for waterfowl or otters at play in the Black River.
Head north on Route 11 and continue to follow Route 106 to Hartness State Airport at 15 Airport Road. This was the first airport in Vermont, used by Charles Lindbergh and boasts the second-longest runway in the state.
Head south on Route 11, Stellafane is an active amateur astronomy and telescope-making club. Founded by Russell W. Porter in 1923 and considered by many to be the birthplace of amateur telescope-making. Check their website for annual convention and mirror-making classes.
You might like to explore some of our many cemeteries: The Crown Point Cemetery on the old Crown Point Military Road, and the Tuttle Cemetery on Rte. 5 across from the waterfall, and the Summer Hill Cemetery are especially interesting.
For lunch go to Two Neanderthals Smokin’ BBQ at 361 River Street, Wednesdays through Sundays, 10:30 AM to 4 or 5 PM.
After lunch, cross the old railroad bridge to Charlestown, NH and visit the Fort at No. 4 open-air museum. They host re-enactments of both French and Indian and the Revolutionary Wars.
Now head back to Springfield on Rte. 11 North and stop at the Eureka Schoolhouse. Built in 1785 by William Bettergneau, it is the oldest surviving schoolhouse in Vermont.
Next to the schoolhouse, is the 37′ long Baltimore Covered Bridge, built in 1820. Moved from its original site over the Great Brook in North Springfield in 1970.
About 1 mile further on Route 11, park just past United (heavy equipment sales) and follow the Toonerville Trail. Heading north, you will encounter a number of informational plaques with QR codes.

Stay the night at the Inn at Weathersfield 1342 Vt Route 106 and then enjoy a full breakfast.
Travel on Route 106 into Springfield, turn right at McDonald’s, then right on Fairground Road. Drive about 2 miles to the North Springfield Bog on the left. This is a boreal kettle bog from the glacial age 10K years ago. You will find a walking trail to and around the bog.
If you are visiting on an early October weekend, we have an annual Vermont Apple Festival & Craft Show at the Riverside Middle School (13 Fairground Road) where you will find food, drink, crafts and entertainment from 9 AM until 4 PM.
Come to our Comtu Cascade Park in the center of town and enjoy a view of the beautiful falls.
Take Valley Street to Wellwood Orchard Road to Wellwood Orchard, which is open daily. During apple season, you can pick your own apples, take a horse drawn wagon ride, enjoy their petting zoo, and shop in the store for fruits and local produce.
From there, go to Wood’s Cider Mill on the left at 1482 Weathersfield Center Road. They are open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM. Besides apples, they make and sell products, such as cider jelly. Take a short trip along Skyline Drive for an exquisite look at the foliage.

If you are looking to hike up to a beautiful view, try Mount Ascutney State Park off of Route 44 in Ascutney, Vermont. It is the highest peak in Windsor County at 3144′. Hike an 18% grade 2.7 miles to the summit. For easier hiking in Springfield, Muckross State Park off the Paddock Road, or Hartness Park off Dell Road or Rte.143, 85 acres of trails.
For fine local art and crafts, visit the Gallery at the VAULT (a Vermont State Craft Center) at 68 Main Street. Shop for artwork, souvenirs, and perhaps holiday gifts. Hours are 11 AM to 5 PM Wednesday through Saturday.
The Chamber of Commerce is open Tuesday to Thursday at 56 Main Street, you can have your photo taken with one of Springfield Vermont’s very own larger-than-life TV Simpson family statues.

Drive 12 miles to Magic Mountain at 495 Magic Mountain Access Road in Londonderry, Vermont. 2850′ elevation, 39 ski runs, 3 chair lifts, 3 surface lifts. Average annual snowfall 12.1′. 50% snow making capability. Night skiing.

Drive 10 or 11 miles to Viking Ski Touring Center at 615 Little Pond Road in Londonderry, Vermont on 26 kilometers of groomed trails.
Note: If the weather has been snowy, cross country skiing is available for free on trails at Crown Point Country Club on Weathersfield Center Road or the Springweather Nature Area on Reservoir Road. Both are just a couple of miles from the center of Springfield.

Springfield Street Festival is held one Saturday in July (July 13th, 2024) and includes fun activities and food.

Kid’s Fishing Derby–Pond at Ferguson Farm at 220 Spencer Hollow Road is stocked with trout one Saturday in June.
